About the Item

Extremely rare and very finely cast, this gilded bronze sculpture of a snake dancer in harem clothes -- but with a modern 1920s hair style -- was sculpted by Raymond Delamarre at the height of the Art Deco period in the 1920s. The nude female figure is shown in harem pants, with a snake writhing around her arms, curving behind her and staring her in the face. She sits on a finely figured Oriental rug, all of which is mounted on an internally-lit box clad in black marble and alabaster. Delamarre was one of France's leading sculptors in the 1920s and 30s, and one of his greatest accomplishments is a pair of monumental angel figures that dominate "The Defense of the Suez Canal" monument situated near Ismailia, Egypt, memorializing the alliance of fighters who defended the region against Turkish invaders during World War I. The sculpture is signed and retains its original cloth-wrapped electrical cord and hardware.
