About the Item

A heavyweight brass Surrealist pipe that is spring-loaded to function as a note holder, and with an opening to hold a pen. The bronzed flat plate metal base is attached to the pipe and a separate wood block base is included for display. We love this as a shelf object because of the way it references the important Surrealist work "The Treachery of Images" by René Magritte. The painting features the phrase, "Ceci n'est pas une pipe", French for "This is not a pipe." The painting is not a pipe, but rather an image of a pipe. This masterpiece of Surrealism creates a three-way paradox out of the conventional notion that objects correspond to words and images. "The Treachery of Images" belongs to a series of word-image paintings by Magritte from the late 1920s. The physical object, a decor piece, that somehow perfectly references Magritte, is a wonderful homage to the artist, in a nuanced manner. Sherrie Levine created a bronze pipe sculpture that was sold in a Phillips Auction in November 2021. We have included a screenshot as reference. This piece bears a striking resemblance to the sold piece.
