Grand Tour Hand Carved Boxwood Romantic Boy & Girl Under Palm Leaf Wall Plaque

About the Item

Beautiful quality, one of a kind German or Italian antique wall sculpture. This rare wall sculpture from the late 1800s is all hand carved out of solid boxwood. Anyone who is capable of creating such a marvelous sculpture out of a wood as hard as boxwood deserves to be called a master carver. Especially the perfect body posture of this romantic and care-free couple, but also their incredibly well carved clothes are of a quality and detail that you just don't find anywhere. Have you also noticed the detail and organic beauty of the little rock formation on which this love couple is standing? The stunning palm leaf under which they are standing is at least as impressive. You can imagine why a worldly traveller in the late 1800s would not have hesitated to purchase this stunning grand tour piece. It also has an amazing patina and apart from a hairline running on the right side of the female (see image 18) and a minor (and admittedly poor) restauration to the stunning palm leaf (see image 14), this antique work of art is in excellent condition. It was reframed in Amsterdam in the 1960s in a beautiful and perfect condition, nutwood frame. There is not another grand tour era boxwood wall sculpture for sale anywhere in the world and because of its rarity, quality and timeless beauty this work of art too is great value for money.
