About the Item

Large 8 Inch Ammonite Specimen Cut Polished and Mounted Fossil - Jurassic - Cretaceous Period, 200 - 145 million years old An excellent quality split ammonite fossil. We hand pick each set. Ammonites were cephalopods that resembled a squid with a shell. The predatory mollusks had eyes, tentacles, and spiral shells resembling a nautilus shell. Ammonites are closely related to an octopus without the shell. They appeared in the fossil record about 240 million years ago with the last descendants disappearing from the record 65 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period. Mounted on custom metal stands with a black painted finish. Height on display stands: 11 in. / 28 cm Weight: 3.3 oz / 1.50 kg The last photo shows three sets of ammonite pairs for relative scale. This pair are the size of the largest set in the image.
