About the Item

Large Gem-Quality Amethyst Geode Chunk/Slice in Revolving Iron Stand, 22.5", Mounted Early 2000s, Uruguay, The Uruguayan geodes usually show that sharp contrast of white quartz edging into dark purple centers. A dramatic gem-quality amethyst geode chunk, mounted in a custom revolving iron display stand. The geode itself measures 18" high, retaining much of its natural volcanic rind, with a deep hollow interior lined in densely clustered, lustrous purple amethyst crystals. Formed over millions of years in volcanic rock cavities, this geode displays the striking contrast of the rugged gray and agate-patterned exterior against the jewel-like amethyst interior. The purple coloration comes from trace iron content in quartz, naturally transformed by geologic processes. The crystals are natural and unpolished, with the outer edge lightly trimmed to reveal the interior cavity. The revolving iron mount (early 2000s) allows full appreciation of both the raw geological surface and the gem-laden interior. The combination of architectural stand and natural mineral makes it equally suited as a collector’s specimen and as a sculptural decorative object. Dimensions: 22.5" H × 10" W × 5" D overall Geode alone: 18" H × 9.5" W × 5" D Base: 4.5" diameter A rare and gem-quality example, prized for its depth of color, strong crystal definition, and sculptural display. Formation & Geology Natural Origin: This geode began forming over 100 million years ago inside volcanic rock cavities. Gas bubbles trapped in cooling lava created hollow pockets. Over time, mineral-rich groundwater seeped in, depositing quartz crystals. Amethyst Development: The purple coloration comes from trace amounts of iron in the quartz, transformed by natural irradiation within the Earth. The deepest, most saturated purple areas reflect slower growth in stable conditions. Outer Surface: The rough gray and agate-like rind is completely natural, showing the volcanic host rock and banding. Treatment & Techniques Natural vs. Polished: The crystals inside are natural, unpolished, with sharp, lustrous facets. Only the outer edge has been trimmed and polished to reveal the geode’s interior cavity. Mounting: The iron frame and revolving display base were custom-made, likely in the early 2000s, to highlight the geode as a sculptural object. The revolving feature allows viewing from multiple angles, emphasizing both the crystal interior and rough geological exterior. Rarity & Aesthetic Value Quality: Deep purple, gemmy amethyst with uniform crystal formation is considered high-grade. Such geodes are rarer than lighter lavender or unevenly grown specimens. Age of Stone: Geologically ancient (tens of millions of years old), though prepared for display only in the last few decades. Size & Proportion: At 22.5" total height (18" for the geode itself), with a dramatic hollow core, it is both large enough to serve as a statement object and elegant in proportion. Decorative Use: Highly collectible for natural history interiors, mineral collectors, or modern design spaces where geology is celebrated as art.
