The last photo is the gift box. Sought after since antiquity as a material for jewelry and artistic artifacts, coral was also used as a medium of exchange in trade between Europe and Asia in the sec. XVI; a symbol of royalty, it adorned the robes of kings and princes. It was attributed therapeutic virtues and the ability to ensure protection of sea deities. With the advent of the Christian era, coral goes to symbolize the blood that Jesus shed on Golgotha, through which humanity is redeemed. In the Middle Ages it symbolized Christ's sovereignty, partly because of the shape of its twigs, often in the shape of a cross. Corals are small animals called arborescent polyps, which form a common skeleton that is calcareous in nature and for some species becomes the base of a reef. By successive layering of colony remains, true organogenic rock formations originate. The color of coral can range from white to pale pink to dark red. Reproduction can occur either by cleavage or sexually. In the latter case, the larva (planula), which has emerged from the egg, after a short period of free-living settles on a bottom support, giving rise to a new colony. For a long time coral was considered either a mineral or a vegetable. The red color is especially common in the Mediterranean from the Gulf of Naples to Sicily and Sardinia at depths ranging from 20 to more than 200 m.
