About the Item

This French bronze group conceived as a pair of animals dressed as people playing cards exhibits many subtle details and a dramatic satirical story. The fox's nature clever and crafty member is playing cards and is obviously proud of his hand well laid out on a barrel while holding open his coat to show he has nothing to hide. The monkey looking much like rouge is tensely trying to hide the ace of spades behind his back to eventually win the hand from the fox. All set among peasant-style trappings of labor and drinking raised up on a rococo base. Each animal and element is cast separately and hand chased and chiseled after the molding then set on the base. The patina is a rich brown gold with nice rub throughs and wears to certain areas giving the piece a beautiful surface.

19th Century Chinese Bronze Dancing Figure
Located in Hudson, NY
The charming figure done completely in the lost wax method is in a primitive naive style. The male figure is dancing excitedly on a rocky outcrop. His costume of a loose-fitting coat with long flared sleeves flying in space as he dances reveals his large potbelly while his loose-fitting shift girdled at the waist with a large belt flips up to show his legs and bare feet as he dances. The figure is suspended on one leg as he moves and his face is animated and happy. The head is cast separately so that his wild hair and beard are free from the body castings...
