About the Item
This is a Tamba ware jar produced in Japan during the early Edo period (circa 17th century). Tamba ware, along with Seto, Tokoname, Echizen, Shigaraki, and Bizen, is known as one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, and developed primarily in Imada-cho, Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture. From the Middle Ages to the early modern period, Tamba potters primarily produced pots, jars, and sake bottles for everyday use, supporting livelihoods in both rural and urban areas. Characterized by simple yet powerful forms and the accidental kiln changes and glaze flow that occur during the firing process, this ware is highly valued today for its beauty.
(The red circle on the map indicates the Tamba kiln.)
This piece truly embodies the allure of Tamba ware. It is covered entirely in a decorative clay called akatsuchibeyu, which contains iron, and then generously overlaid with ash glaze. Furthermore, ash that falls into the furnace during the firing process becomes a natural glaze that blends seamlessly with the surface of the vessel, creating a beautiful harmony between manmade and natural elements. The powerful dripping of dark brown glaze onto the brown clay surface evokes the profound beauty unique to Tamba ware.
It echoes closely with contemporary works featured in the Japanese art book "Kotanba," serving as a reference, making it a masterpiece with a clear positioning in terms of both its era and form. Its rounded yet dignified form maintains a sense of stability and elegance when viewed from any angle. It is in excellent condition, with no major damage or repairs, suggesting that it has been carefully passed down to the present day, spanning hundreds of years.
Please note that as this is an extremely ancient vessel, water may seep in if poured directly into it. When arranging fresh flowers, please use a glass container inside. Displaying dried flowers or branches accentuates the wabi-sabi aesthetic and blends beautifully into modern spaces. Simply placing it in a tokonoma alcove or a corner of your living room will have the power to elevate the entire space.
This vase, which embodies the history and beauty of Tamba ware, is not just an antique piece; it reflects the spiritual essence of Japanese culture. It blends exquisitely with both traditional Japanese rooms and modern interiors, adding depth and tranquility to any space. This is a masterpiece that you should definitely take advantage of.
Also, I want many people to know about the quality of antiques, so I set the price reasonably.
How about showing it off to your friends around you?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are a specialized team dealing in antiques and vintage items, comprised of stores based on three distinct brands. While focusing on Japanese items, we also offer a carefully curated selection of attractive goods from around the world—each evoking the culture and history of its country of origin.
Unlike the traditional Japanese antique furniture and art that have been appreciated overseas until now, we shine a light on the tools and furniture that were used for many years in ordinary Japanese homes and farmhouses. These objects have gained a unique charm over time, their beauty deepened by the history accumulated through daily life. In today’s world, however, many of these precious items are discarded during home demolitions. We are committed to reassessing their value and passing them on to future generations.
Drawing from our extensive experience—having seen tens of thousands of items through direct purchases, markets, and auction houses—we carefully select and present only the most captivating pieces. This is something made possible only through the years of knowledge and expertise we have cultivated.
Rather than focusing on the widely known facets of Japanese art and culture, we highlight the subtle beauty born from the everyday life of common people. It is this rediscovered beauty, steeped in history, that we strive to share with the world.
