About the Item
These blue and white Dutch Delft jars, hand painted and marked by De Porceleyne Bijl, were made in the Netherlands circa 1780.
Each jar has a softly faceted octagonal form.
The hand-painted panels alternate between beautiful bouquets of peonies and chrysanthemums or oriental scrolls.
The inclusion of these scrolls adds cultural richness, reflecting Europe’s 17th- and 18th-century fascination with Asian art and design.
Surrounding the panels are deep blue borders of scrolling foliage.
The cobalt palette is rich and varied, and light plays across the textured surface of the jars, bringing out delicate shifts in tone and depth.
Each jar is topped with a domed cover surmounted by a lion finial, charmingly individual in character.
Together, the pair captures the beauty and character of late 18th-century Delftware.
