Blue & White Barrel Shaped Japanese Ceramic Hibachi Plum Blooms and Pine Trees

$650

About

1950s Japanese Modern earthenware ceramic Hibachi with hand painted mountainous village scene with plum blooms and pine trees. The symbol of the plum or peach tree, which are the first to bloom in the New Year, is of perseverance, hope and the coming of Spring. While pine trees are a symbol of strength. This Hibachi has a cylindrical shape rather the more usual rounded form. Another distinguishing attribute of this Hibachi is a set of 5 unglazed applied protrusions on the inside center of the brazier, possibly to aerate the charcoal. A Hibachi (??) is an earthenware brazier in which charcoal is burned to provide indoor heating. Before WWII, hibachis were common in Japanese homes but now they are usually seen in some traditional ceremonies and festivals. Measurements: 12 inches diameter x 10 inches high.
