About the Item

A finely crafted Ancient Apulian Magna Graecia Bell Krater, dating to c. 350 BC, used as a wine mixing bowl in classical antiquity. This red-figure pottery vessel features twin handles, a footed base, and a jet-black glaze, skillfully decorated with red-figure painted scenes accented in white and yellow pigments. Side A depicts a seated maiden, elegantly draped in a sleeveless garment, adorned with a beaded necklace and wristlets, holding a box in her extended left hand while gracefully turning to gaze over her shoulder. Side B features a "lady of fashion", her hair styled in a saccos and bun, delicately gazing into a handheld mirror. These scenes are framed by a curled wave design band below and a chevron pattern beneath the rim, characteristic of Apulian artistry. A beautifully preserved example of Magna Graecia craftsmanship, this piece offers a glimpse into the artistic and cultural traditions of the ancient Greek colonies in southern Italy. Provenance:NJ Collection, acquired from Arte Primitivo and Palmyra Heritage Gallery. Previously part of the collection of Dr. Ruth Schwalbe, PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
