About the Item

An antique Blue John Campana vase, dating to circa 1820. Made from striking Blue John, this handsome urn displays banded veining in a classic campana form. It features gadrooned detail above a socle base with a striking flared urn above, complimented by a square black Ashford marble base. Blue John Blue John, also known as Derbyshire fluorspar, is thought to have come from the French ‘bleu et jaune’, meaning ‘blue and yellow’, and famed for its stunning purple, blue, and yellow colouring, like this one. The mineral is thought to only have been found amongst the rocks of Treak Cliff Hill, in Castleton, Derbyshire. The majority of Blue John mines are no longer open, with only Treak Cliff Cavern and Blue John Cavern still running. The mineral is highly valued for its ornamental variety of calcium fluoride due to its unique crystal structure and striking veining. This urn displays vibrant dark blue and purple markings with subtle yellow veining.

Impressive 19th Century Warwick Vase
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
An impressive 19th century terracotta scale Warwick Vase standing on a weathered terracotta pedestal. Stamped ‘Blanchard & Co’, this particular design features in their 1869 illustrated catalogue of Beautiful Works of Art: Terracotta (pictured), so we are confident that it dates from this period. Though smaller than the original, this Warwick Vase is of impressive scale, standing at 1.5m tall. It comprises of 2 components: the decorative vase and its pedestal. The vase is detailed with an egg and dart moulded rim above male and female masks among vine leaves, berries and scrolls in high relief and entwined handles as it is in the original. The pedestal is simpler, featuring moulded wreath decoration, elevating the urn to eye level so that its grandeur can be closely observed. It is approximately 160 years old and as such features age-related weathering, chips, losses and historic restorations, each adding to the time-worn appeal of the piece. Core details of the vase remain intact making it instantly recognisable as the famous Warwick Vase. Provenance This terracotta Warwick Vase and pedestal was sourced from Bodfach Hall, a historic country house with expansive grounds in the heart of the Welsh Marches. It resided here in the gardens until recently as an impressive late 19th century item of statuary. The Warwick Vase The original Warwick Vase, often closely associated with the Albani Vase...

Large Glazed Greek Terracotta Vase
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
An impressive large Greek style vase, intricately crafted in terracotta and applied with a vibrant treacle glaze. Shaped like a trophy, this mid 19th century urn shares similarities with the marble vase attributed to prominent 2nd century Greek sculptor Sosibios in terms of shape and style, detailed with unique handles shaped like a swans neck. Unlike the Sosibios vase, the heart of this terracotta vase is largely plain showcasing the beautiful tone variation and lustre of the glaze. To the top, the vase is more intricate, detailed with a section of leaves and berries and stands on a socle carved with leaves to match the lower portion of the vase’s body. Thanks to its large scale and beautiful colour, this Greek style terracotta vase makes a striking statement piece placed on a pedestal or at the centre of a large sideboard...
