About the Item

Produced in Czechoslovakia during the 1930s, this tall ceramic vase is part of the now-celebrated ‘Alienware’ series by Ditmar Urbach, a manufacturer known for blending Art Deco forms with futuristic surface treatments. The piece features a sculptural urn silhouette with an elongated body, circular foot, and twin angular handles—echoes of classical vessels subtly subverted by the applied decoration. Finished in a distinctive craquelure glaze of soft buttermilk and pale ochre tones, the front is embellished with a stylised metallic rosette, edged in an unexpected acid green halo—an element that gave the series its cult nickname. Marked ‘1888’ to the underside, the vase stands approximately 28 cm high and 12 cm in diameter. It remains in good condition overall, some wear to the metallic rosette along with a few minor nicks and irregularities to the base—likely original to its firing and glaze process, rather than wear. A striking example of early 20th-century Czech ceramic design, bridging classical form and imaginative modernist decoration.
