About the Item

A striking small-scale ceramic vase from the 1930s, crafted by Ditmar Urbach—one of Czechoslovakia’s leading ceramic manufacturers of the interwar period. This distinctive piece belongs to the factory's avant-garde Alienware series, a line that merged organic forms with fantastical, futuristic detailing, echoing the forward-looking spirit of early 20th-century modernist design. Moulded in a stylised urn silhouette, the vase features two looped side handles and a subtly ridged body, coated in a finely crackled ivory glaze. Bright cobalt blue speckles punctuate the surface, adding vibrancy to the muted base tone. Most striking is the central front cartouche: a panel of swirling black Art Deco motifs, sharply outlined by a luminous border of acid green—an unexpected combination that defines the series’ otherworldly appeal. The vase stands 18.5 cm tall with a diameter of approximately 8 cm, making it a compact decorative piece ideal for displaying a single stem or as a standalone sculptural object. A compelling example of 1930s Czech pottery, this Alienware vase showcases Ditmar Urbach’s experimental edge and reflects the era’s fascination with both ancient forms and speculative aesthetics. In good vintage condition, with only minor wear consistent with age.
