About the Item

Inspired by the ancient art form of firing ceramics in a dirt pit, Erin Hupp’s latest collection of pit-fired ceramics is a once in a decade (or lifetime) body of work. Each piece is hand thrown with a unique micaceous clay that can withstand the thermal shock and temperature fluctuations of the all natural pit-fire. Erin used corn cobs, sawdust, wood, and natural charcoal as fuel for the 24-hour pit firing. She thoughtfully tended a slow, steady rise of heat and used horse hair and colorants to create one-of-a-kind charing patterns and onto each piece. After the pit cooled overnight for over 12 hours, the pieces were carefully removed, revealing a unique and stunning collection. Please note: The Pit Fire collection is raw clay and unglazed. Enjoy using it as a decorative object, with dried flowers, or place a glass vessel placed internally to use with water for fresh flowers. Wipe with a slightly damp washcloth to clean. Ceramic artist Erin Hupp designs and creates bespoke, hand-crafted ceramics on her pottery wheel. From vases to tableware, her work achieves balance between function and form. Her work has been described as organic and sensory. Erin has been creating her art, by hand, on her potter’s wheel for the past 25 years. Her work can currently be experienced at Californios, Nightbird, Sons and Daughters, Pasta Bar, Acquerello, Sorrel, and Stanly Ranch Auberge Resort. She has been featured in Business of Home, Forbes, Luxe and Design Milk.
