About the Item

A rare and unusual castle Hedingham pottery twin handled puzzle vase or jug designed by Edward Bingham (British, 1829-1914) and dating between 1864 and 1901. Inspired by medieval and Tudor wares Bingham hand produced an assortment of wares, mostly unique. This early example is of a twin handled vase shape with a conical shaped foot with narrow rounded body and a pierced pattern top applied with a series of eight spouts with loop handles applied to either side of the body. Applied in relief with floral designs the puzzle jug is hand painted in tones of red and yellow on a green ground. The base has an open hole with incised instructions to place a cork in this for use. The jug has a raised castle mark and is incised Essex Art Pottery and is numbered 13. In good condition with wear associated with age and use.
