Gunnar Nylund Rörstrand Unique Flambe Line Bedouin Vase

About the Item

Gunnar Nylund (French, 1904-97) was born in Paris to the well-known Finnish portrait painter and sculptor Felix Nylund. Gunnar Nylund was a Swedish Ceramic designer from the 1930’s and brought a wide range of styles and influences on his long and remarkable career in ceramics across both Sweden and Denmark. His work spans the period from the 1920s to the 1970s making him one of the great leaders in Scandinavian design. While he did produce work in glass it is his ceramic work that he is best known for. He joined Bing and Grondhal in 1926, where he met Nathalie Krebs. In 1929, they established Nylund-Krebs the forerunner to Saxbo. In 1931, Nylund left to assume the position of artistic director at Rörstrand where he remained until 1958. His work for Rörstrand as artistic director helped establish them as a leader in Swedish ceramics along with Gustavsberg. In 1959, he returned to Denmark to direct the small factory Nymolle. As an extremely prolific designer, Nylund moved with ease between both countries, leaving a remarkable design legacy in his wake. This stunning and large Swedish art deco studio pottery vase decorated with Bedouin figures is part of the Flambe line designed by Gunnar Nylund for Rörstrand in the 1930’s. The large vase is a unique artwork painted by Olson and is of flattened oval shape standing on a narrow oval unglazed foot rim with a slightly recessed glazed base. The vase has a similar narrow raised oval top rim. The body of the vase is decorated with Bedouin style figures, one riding a camel, crossing a desert at night with stars in the sky. The scene continues around the body of the vase with the opposite side decorated with a solitary camel standing near an oasis with pyramids in the background. The vase is exquisitely decorated in sung glaze in both matt and glazed tones of brown, black and ochre with gilded detailing. This impressive vase is marked Model Nylund Flambe Rörstrand ALP Lidköping, Décor OLSON, UNIK, 5959 to the base. A very special and unique vase! Provenance: from a choice collection of Scandinavian pottery amassed by a private gentleman who sadly now has insufficient space to display these fine pieces. Excellent condition with light wear associated with age and use.
