About the Item
An unusual Italian mid-century twin spout art pottery vase in the manner of Guido Gambone with a roughcast finish signed GCC Amalfi and dating from around 1950. The hand-crafted vase stands on a narrow round unglazed foot with a U-shaped uneven tubelike body formed as two stems extending from a wider misshapen base. The body has been hand painted in a stripe pattern in bright colors covered in an off-white slip with a roughcast finish. The vase has a white glazed base and is marked by hand GCC ITALY AMALFI. An unusual and very stylish piece of typical period Italian design.
Provenance: acquired in the British art market.
In good condition. Rocks very slightly on its foot however is stable and a wonderful display piece.

A very stylish and unusual glazed ceramic handled vase by renowned Italian artist Marcello Fantoni (1915-2011). The rounded bottle shaped vase has a tall funnel neck with a large rounded loop handle attached to one side. The cream coloured body is decorated with run glazes in blue and yellow over a lightly textured purple ground. The vase is signed Fantoni to the base.
Marcello Fantoni was born in Florence in 1915 and studied an Art of Ceramics course at the Institute of Art at Porta Romana from where he graduated as a 'maestro' of art in 1934. In 1936 he established the Fantoni Ceramic studio and produced many unique pieces which quickly found him fame and recognition. His success continued and today his work is represented around the world in all the leading art institutions including among them the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York, Victoria and Albert Museum of London, Museum of Modern Art of Tokyo and Kyoto.
