Large American Studio Pottery Iris Motif Vase, Style of Newcomb College, Signed

About the Item

Large American Studio Pottery Vase with Iris Motif, in the Style of Newcomb College, Signed, Late 20th Century A striking and masterfully crafted American studio pottery vase, boldly scaled and richly detailed, evoking the stylistic and decorative traditions of the famed Newcomb College pottery of the early 20th century. This monumental form stands 15 inches high and measures 15.5 inches in diameter, rising on a flared 7-inch base. The vase is wheel-thrown and features an elegant inverted bell form with a delicately articulated rim, hand-pierced and sculpted to echo the organic silhouettes of iris petals—suggestive of blooming flora breaking through the vessel's edge. The carved surface is adorned with a rhythmic band of tall, slender Louisiana irises, rendered in a stylized sgraffito technique, with deep incisions outlining the leaves and blossoms against the cream ground. Glazed in a cool celadon green and pale blue over ivory stoneware, the surface has a soft matte-to-satin sheen that accentuates the linear textures and subtle tonal variations. The coloration and technique recall the Arts & Crafts period, particularly the work of Newcomb College potters such as Sadie Irvine and Marie de Hoa LeBlanc, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. The interior is fully glazed in a soft matte wash, while the underside reveals a signature incised into the raw stoneware body—likely an independent or regional potter working in the Southeastern United States during the late 20th century. A beautifully scaled, highly decorative studio piece with commanding form, lyrical surface design, and regional American art pottery appeal. Dimensions: 15.5" diameter x 15" high 7" diameter base
