Large container Rum top by Scheurich Keramik
About the Item
Large glazed ceramic container (rum top), used for preserving fruit by steeping it in rum (below, just for your knowledge, we also report one of the most used Rumtopf recipes...) but this jar is also beautiful to use just as an ornament, or as a cookie jar or ..... as you choose.
The one proposed, decorated with the typical fruits that are used, was produced by Scheurich, approximately in the 1960s/70s and is in very good condition, signs of use are almost imperceptible.
The Rumtopf
Traditional German method of storing fruit under rum and sugar; start preparation in spring, finishing in November, incorporating seasonal fruit step by step. The mixture will be consumed on the first Sunday of Advent and throughout the Christmas season.
Use an enameled earthenware pot, called a rum pot, which is ideal for keeping the fruit steeping in the dark.
Here are some examples of fruits that, washed and dried well, you can use:
April: strawberries, cutting the largest ones in half
May: cherries, stalkless and pitted
June: peaches and/or apricots, pitted into chunks
July: white and purple plums, pitted in pieces
August: red fruits such as blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, whole (preferably not washed)
September: grapes, cut without seeds
October: pears, peeled, pass quickly through water warm and sugar, drain and then cut into pieces
November: pineapple, peeled, without core, cubed
Important to use seasonal fruits every every month.
Rumtopf is ready on the first Sunday of Advent and is generally eaten at Christmas time, with ice cream or cream, or eaten alone, at the end of a meal.
The liquor can garnish dessert or be drunk as a digestive.
When the macerated fruit is removed from the jar, it can be stored in airtight jars in a cool place.
The original recipe calls for 55% alcohol rum, if you can't find any use a 40-42% alcohol dark rum by adding, if desired, 95° pure alcohol (3/4 rum 1/4 alcohol).
Lengthy but semi-simple procedure: each month a different fruit is added, macerated for an hour with sugar (half the weight of the fruit). You then put the fruit in the jar along with the rum, covering it completely to prevent mold growth.
