About the Item

Large Ercole Barovier - Barovier & Toso Aborigeno Vase 1954 A large art glass vase from the 'Aborigeni' series designed by Ercole Barovier in 1954 for Barovier & Toso, Murano, Italy. Thick colorless glass with melted powder in shades of orange-brown and ochre. A very rare example of the famous designs of Ercole Barovier. Exhibited on the XXXII Venice Biennale in 1954. Barovier & Toso is the oldest Muranese glass manufactory founded in 1295. In the early 1900s Benvenuto Barovier, Vittorio Zecchin and Umberto Belotto designed a series of mosaik glasses in liberty style. In 1920 Ercole Barovier became artistic director. Under his direction Barovier, Barovier & Toso won numerous awards for their innovations. In 1930 the award-winning “Primavera” series was presented at the Venice Biennale. Barovier continued to produce innovative designs. Several of them became iconic status as there are the 'Lenti', 'Crepuscolo', 'Autunno Gemmato', 'Oriente', 'Rostrato', 'Tessere' and 'Barbarico' – just to name a few. The company became Ferro Toso Vetrerie Artistiche Riunite S.A in 1936 when Vetreria Artistica Barovier merged with Ferro Toso. In 1942, the company was renamed to Barovier & Toso. Large Twin-Handled Vase by Ercole Barovier for Barovier and Toso, 1956
By Ercole Barovier, Barovier&Toso
Located in London, GB
The double handled trumpet shaped vase designed by Ercole Barovier (1889-1974) for Barovier and Toso 1956-57 is set in a layer of clear glass over a layer of white, over a layer oyster colored opaque glass with gold leaf application. The ribbing at the base of vase the stretches out at the mouth tied in by a ringed band. The handles have been skillfully formed by tightly twisting the glass formed into rings applied close to the upper edge of the vase. Barovier made his mark on the company, the glass-works industry and history. The vessel executed by Barovier and Toso shows the technical complexity of a company founded in 1295. Barovier and Toso have held the realm of its glassworks for 750 years in Italy as Vetreria Artistica Barovier & Co.
