Late 19th Century Japanese Cloisonne Enamel 'Dragon' Vase
About the Item
The Meiji period in Japan at the end of the 19th century is sometimes known as the Golden Age of cloisonne enameling, and with a vase like this it's not difficult to see why. Standing at nearly two metres tall, this Japanese enamel vase is a truly exceptional feat of craftsmanship. Every small detail has been rendered with an astonishing degree of precision, and all using a highly complex enameling technique: the cloisonne method, which involves applying fine wires to the surface of a metal to form the outlines of shapes. Enamel paste is then poured into the shapes created by the wires, and the object is fired, often several times, before smoothing out the surface.
The vase is ovoid in shape and features a beautiful color palette of pink, yellow, turquoise and blue. Flora, fauna and mythology combine to provide the inspiration for the vase's decoration: its neck is decorated with a large depiction of a dragon, and the body features several further panels which show more dragons and mythical birds. In between the panels there are some highly intricate floral and foliate motifs, which can also be found on the vase's circular waisted base and its petal-form rim.
