Monumental Fukagawa Blue and White Arita Landscape Vase, Signed, Mid-20th C.

About the Item

Monumental Fukagawa Blue and White Arita Landscape Vase, Signed, Circa Mid-20th Century, 2 pieces is the vase, the second item is exceptional carved hardwood stand. A striking and masterfully painted Japanese blue and white porcelain vase, attributed to the Fukagawa studio in Arita, Japan. This monumental baluster-form vase stands an impressive 20 inches high and spans 18 inches in diameter, with an 8-inch circular foot, and is presented on a finely carved Chinese hardwood display stand. The exterior is adorned with a continuous and evocative landscape scene executed in delicate underglaze cobalt blue. The painting features mist-shrouded mountains, rivers, and waterfalls flowing through groves of pine and maple, with a lone scholar's pavilion nestled among the trees—an homage to traditional literati aesthetics. The scene evokes the shanshui (mountain-water) painting tradition of East Asia, rendered with remarkable control and fluidity. The base bears a hand-painted cobalt blue signature flanked by a red seal mark. The signature is consistent with mid-20th-century Fukagawa studio pieces, possibly from the later Fukagawa Seiji company after its reorganization post-WWII, and may represent a senior decorator or individual artist within the kiln. The red seal appears to read “福” (fuku, fortune or Fukagawa), a character often found on export pieces. Dimensions (overall, including stand): Approximately 24" high x 18" diameter Vase alone: 20" high, 8" base diameter Condition: Excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, or restorations. Minor glaze irregularities and firing marks consistent with hand production.
