About the Item

This exceptional pair of finely detailed faience vases is a striking example of historicist ceramic design from the late 19th century, likely made in Germany or Austria circa 1880–1900, inspired by Renaissance and Baroque revival styles. Each vase is richly decorated with elaborate relief motifs, finely hand-painted in a harmonious palette of ivory, cobalt blue, ochre, and terracotta tones, and further enhanced with touches of gilding. The baluster-form bodies are adorned with alternating panels of floral arabesques and heraldic crests. One medallion prominently features the date “1590” along with a coat of arms surmounted by scrolls and a stylized acanthus border. The reverse presents a different escutcheon with a stylized fortress or castle motif, possibly evoking the arms of a Central European city or noble family. The neck of each vase is encircled by a band of lion masks in high relief, lending an air of nobility and strength to the ensemble. Perhaps the most extraordinary feature of these vases is the pair of sculptural handles, modeled as bearded male busts with crossed arms, dressed in medieval attire and rising out of the scroll-form handles. These whimsical and expressive figures add a dramatic and sculptural dimension to the vases, reminiscent of the German Renaissance revival pieces made by makers such as Eichwald or Villeroy & Boch. Originally intended as decorative objects, possibly for a grand entrance hall or refined interior, these vases reflect both a fascination with historical ornamentation and the technical prowess of late 19th-century faience manufacturers. Their elegant proportions and exceptional level of detail make them a rare and decorative addition to any collection of European ceramics.
