pair of French 19th century Ormolu and Enameled Vases, signed Barbedienne

About the Item

A stunning and most impressive pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. enameled Bronze and Ormolu vases, signed F. Barbedienne circa 1880. Each impressive Champlevé vase is raised by four Ormolu pawed feet with palmette designed top caps. Two of the legs are decorated with pierced acanthus leaf mounts and a Jaguar's head holding an oval pull above. The elaborate tapered body showcases wonderful Champlevé style designs of scrolling foliate movements in various colors. The top of each vase contains a circular mottled Ormolu band, which is where the Barbedienne stamp can be found. Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810 - 1892) was a renowned French metalworker and bronze founder. Between 1850 and 1854 his firm , Barbedienne, provided furnishings in the Renaissance Revival style for the Hôtel de Ville, Paris. They received numerous medals at the International Exhibitions, including medals in three different classes at the International Exhibition of 1862 in London.
