About the Item

A Pair of Large French Baccarat Blue and Green Crystal Gilt Bronze Mounted Vases. This pair of large cylindrical vases was produced by the Baccarat crystal works in France, known for their finely cut and richly colored crystal wares since the 18th century. The gilt bronze bases bear a stamped Baccarat mark on the underside, an uncommon feature that indicates direct mounting at the Baccarat workshop rather than by a separate bronzier. The mark is struck into the bronze mount near the edge and depicts the factory seal. Each vase is composed of thick blue crystal overlaid with clear green crystal decoration. The body is formed as a tall, straight cylinder, with a green band encircling the upper rim that features a continuous frieze of interlocking lozenge and lattice motifs highlighted with gilding. The central design consists of applied green crystal leaves and hop vines, with details outlined in gold. The vine pattern wraps entirely around the surface and includes hop cones emerging from curling tendrils. At the base, additional green crystal forms the ground layer of the design, visible through the interior. The mounts are composed of four-legged gilt bronze frames that support the crystal bodies. Each mount features a circular collar into which the crystal vase is seated. The legs extend downward in a scroll-foot form with squared vertical struts, connecting to the collar at four evenly spaced points. These mounts elevate the vases while providing structural support. Baccarat, established in 1764 in the Lorraine region, rose to prominence in the 19th century as a leading French manufacturer of fine crystal. The firm was known for its innovation in color layering, wheel-cutting, and integrated bronze mounting. These vases demonstrate Baccarat’s technical ability to fuse blue and green crystal in a single object, with precisely applied overlay work and integrated gilded detailing. The stamped Baccarat mark on the bronze base is an uncommon feature, found only on pieces where the mounts were produced or assembled by the factory itself. This pair belongs to a category of ornamental vessels designed for display within refined interiors during the period of their production.
