About the Item
A high-quality and finely detailed pair of large French 19th century Neoclassical style white biscuit porcelain krater vases. Each vase is beautifully modeled in white unglazed matte white porcelain and glazed white porcelain , showcasing the crisp sculptural quality prized by French porcelain ateliers of the period. Inspired by ancient Greco-Roman prototypes such as the Borghese and Medici kraters, the vases are elegantly proportioned with wide everted rims bordered by delicate beaded edges.
Encircling the body is a continuous frieze in low relief, depicting classical figures including draped maidens, nude male forms, and musicians playing lyres and pipes—all rendered with remarkable precision and fluidity. The scenes are framed by a smooth ground and gently raised floral motifs just beneath the lip. The lower section of the vase is adorned with finely sculpted acanthus leaves above a rounded base.
Two gracefully arched handles emerge from the sides, terminating in expressive bearded male masks, and connecting at the upper shoulder and midsection of the vase. Each piece is raised on a fluted stem with a gadrooned collar resting atop a square plinth base.
The white biscuit porcelain surface emphasizes the refined modeling and classical aesthetic, creating a marble-like effect that was highly sought after during the 19th century. This elegant pair embodies the timeless artistry and neoclassical sophistication of French decorative arts.
