About the Item

A rare and beautifully crafted tin-glazed earthenware bottle/vase in the traditional Japanese Fles style, notable for its delicate geometric motifs painted in soft, tranquil shades of green. The form, reminiscent of a garlic bulb shape, carries a rich history rooted in functional simplicity and elegant organic lines—qualities that have resonated through centuries and influenced modern design aesthetics focused on clean, natural shapes. This piece is finished with a lustrous milky tin glaze, characteristic of Delftware, a tin-based glaze that gives the surface an opaque white, glossy finish ideal for detailed painting. The use of tin glaze dates back to the 16th century and was a transformative innovation that allowed Dutch potters to create vibrant, painterly ceramics in an era when white-firing clays were scarce in Europe. Royal Delft (De Porceleyne Fles), established in 1653, is the last remaining original factory producing authentic Delftware, continuing a legacy of craftsmanship and innovation that spans nearly four centuries. Delftware was a revolutionary response to the scarcity of true porcelain in Europe, enabling Dutch artisans to mimic the smooth, white surface of coveted Chinese porcelain during the Age of Exploration. The factory’s iconic blue-and-white motifs, inspired by Chinese imports, evolved into uniquely Dutch designs that influenced decorative arts throughout Europe. Royal Delft’s significance lies not only in its technical mastery but also in its role as a cultural crossroads between East and West, blending Eastern motifs with European techniques to create timeless works of art. Its dedication to hand-painting and artisanal production preserves centuries-old craft traditions in an age of industrialization, making its pieces prized by collectors, museums, and design enthusiasts worldwide. This vase was expertly hand-painted by Remmerswaal C.E. during his final year at Royal Delft in 1972, showcasing the factory’s ongoing commitment to blending historic techniques with contemporary artistry. The soft green palette and geometric patterns reflect both traditional influences and modern design trends, exemplifying how these historic forms continue to inspire today’s aesthetic sensibilities. This vase is not only a collector’s treasure but also a symbol of the dynamic dialogue between Japanese cultural heritage and Dutch craftsmanship, embodying centuries of global artistic exchange and the enduring beauty of handcrafted ceramics.
