About the Item

Outstanding Richard Ginori porcelain centerpiece compote, circa 19th Century. This rare and whimsical antique compote is hand painted with a "Bacchanalian" motif and a polychrome glaze. It is from the Belle Epoque period that flourished in the latter part of the 19th Century. The interior and top portion of the compote has a rich royal blue high gloss glaze with a pierced porcelain design. The exterior of the compote has three-dimensional mythical mermaid-like figures with large wings and serpent-like heads on the right and left hand side. On the front and on the back of the centerpiece are expertly hand painted similar mythical mermaid-like figures with a portrait in between them surrounded by fruit and leaves. There are also hand painted geometric designs underneath the top reticulated portion. Signed on bottom: "Ginori" 327/1066 with crown logo. 19th Century Italian craftsmanship at its best!
