Robert Hanke Art Nouveau Porcelain Double Handled Hydrangea Motif Antique Vase

About the Item

This exceptional ceramic Art Nouveau vase was created by the esteemed Austrian potter Robert Hanke circa 1900. It features a cylindrical body with a cinched mid sectioned and sculptural cylindrical open bow form supports that extend out from the body of the piece. The front of the vase offers sculptural clusters of white hydrangeas- as well as umber and olive stylized grape leaf motifs- in relief, set against a striated body in two sumptuous hues of green. The back of the piece offers an austere counterpoint to the maximalist front with striated moss and olive hues that with stylized fastening detailing (suggesting bunched fabric) revealing elliptical aubergine forms beneath. With its beautiful quality of construction and incredibly modern aesthetic that looks as contemporary today as it did when it was created more than one hundred years ago, this piece would be a winning addition to any style of interior from traditional to contemporary. It is in excellent vintage condition and signed Robert Hanke. This is an excellent example of his practice sure to delight collectors of his work as well as those with a penchant for all things exquisite. Hanke owned and operated one of the first pottery factories (Townwarenfabrikin) in the Teplice area of Bohemia, which at that time was part of Austria. Founded in 1882 Hanke produced various luxury vases, pitchers, and porcelain objects, which are now housed in many private and institutional collections throughout the world.
