SET of 2 art pottery Vases late 60s by Barbara Lampe :: Anton Lang Oberammergau

About the Item

"Set of two masterfully crafted vases by Barbara Lampe, granddaughter of company founder Anton Lang from Oberammergau (January 17, 1875 - May 30, 1 938) was a German studio potter and an actor in the Oberammergau Passion Play. He played the role of Jesus Christ in 1900, 1910, and 1922.[3] He was the Prologue Speaker in 1930[4] and again in the Jubilee Production of 1934. He even appeared on the cover of the TIME magazine on December 17, 1923. smaller vase: 8.5cm high ~ Ø 15.5cm ~ weight:0.56 Kg bigger vase: 23,5cm high ~ Ø 10 cm ~ weight: 0.6 Kg I just had the pleasure to hear back from a pottery expert, Mr. K. whom I contacted for further information whoforwarded me an Email of 2023: "I called Barbara Lampe this morning. I found her website, but it doesn't exist anymore. I also found her email address online, but it doesn't work anymore. I found a pot with the Anton Lang mark on it (I'll post pictures later). I wanted to find out more about it. Barbara Lampe was very friendly and told me a lot of interesting things. I want to share this information with you. She was born in February 1949, and now (Sept. 2023) she is 74. She is a master potter. In Germany, to be a master potter, ( you have to be a Meister of pottery in Germany to run a pottery ) - she took over the pottery from her father Karl in 1975- her pottery used the "Anton Lang" mark until 1996 (since then a BL mark)- also the name of the pottery changed in 1996 to "Töpferei Barbara Lampe"- the pottery It closed on December 31, 2021, after five generations of Lang potters in Oberammergau.Between 1975 and 1982, her husband, Uli Lampe, also worked in her pottery. His pots have an additional UL mark next to the Anton Lang mark." About Anton Lang: (from Wikipedia) Legacy In 1923–24 Lang visited the U.S. and was asked to comment on many of the current events of the day. When reporters told Lang of “religious clashes” in the United States, which then was witnessing fights between evolutionists and religious fundamentalists and the rebirth of the Ku Klux Klan and its anti-Catholic and anti-Semitic propaganda, and of “the organized manifestations of bigotry” he “seemed incredulous” and “shook his head deprecatingly.” Lang commented that “At Oberammergau we have all kinds. There is a Catholic church, and a chapel that is used by the Protestants --- Baptists, Methodists, Episcopalians, and all kinds. But that isn’t what counts. It is how one lives that makes one good or bad; and Jesus, I believe, will take us all to heaven according to our virtues.” “And the Jews?” a reporter asked. Lang smiled again, and replied: ‘Yes, I think the Jews, too, will go to heaven.’”[6] In 1938, rumors reached England that Lang was in trouble with the Nazi authorities. He was a pacifist and also opposed Nazi attempts to add overtly anti-Semitic language to the Passion Play. Two English newspapers hired Elizabethe Corathiel to visit Lang. “He was exceedingly anxious to impress upon me the necessity of denying the rumours, pointing out that it might be very dangerous for him if they were allowed to persist.” Two weeks later Lang was dead’. Corathiel was “convinced that the political trend at the time hastened his end.”[7] Almost the whole Oberammergau population attended Lang's funeral. “There were no tributes, however, from Nazi party or State authorities nor was there any Nazi uniform among the 1,200 mourners in the little churchyard.”[1]

The construction of Landshut began in 1204 under the rule of Duke Ludwig of Bavaria. It was a typical Wittelsbach founding town and marked a new form of territorial politics for the Bavarian dukes. From 1231, Landshut became the residence of the Wittelsbach dynasty and the capital of the Duchy of Bavaria until 1255. Due to the division of Bavarian lands, Landshut alternated between being a capital and a residential town. The town thrived thanks to its location on the Isar River and its strategic positioning along trade routes. By the 14th century, Landshut had developed its Gothic town center, which remained largely unchanged until the 19th century. During the period from 1392 to 1503, Landshut experienced a prosperous and politically important era under the rule of the three "rich" Dukes Heinrich, Ludwig, and Georg. Landshut also gained prestige through the magnificent wedding of Duke George the Rich to the daughter of the Polish king...
