About the Item

A beautiful set of Swedish Modern pottery vases and bowl with matte white 'Carrara' glaze. Hand turned, designed by Wilhelm Kåge at Gustavsberg in Sweden. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the Carrara series exudes an air of timeless beauty. Each element is carefully balanced, creating a harmonious composition that is both contemporary and classic. The series is named after the pristine Carrara marble, which serves as its inspiration. The Carrara glaze was developed by Wilhelm Kåge for Gustavsberg in the 1930s. It is a flint porcelain with a highly calcined glaze which was first shown at exhibitions in Malmö and Copenhagen in 1930. Just like the revered stone, this trio boasts a flawless, pristine white glaze that radiates purity and grace. • Large vase measurements: Height 13.5 cm (5.3 in) Diam. 13 cm (5.1 in) • Small vase measurements: Height 10.3 cm (4 in) Diam. 4.4 cm (1.7 in) • Bowl measurements: Diam. 15.4 cm (6 in) Height 4.7 cm (1.8 in) • Listed price is for whole set (3) • Condition: All pieces in great vintage condition. Totally free from cracks, chips or any substantial surface wear. Some yellowing inside the small vase, probably due to old flower water. • The Artist Wilhelm Kåge was a Swedish artist, painter, and ceramicist. Between 1917 and 1949, he worked as artistic director at Gustavsberg porcelain factory. It was during this time that Kåge developed numerous ceramic designs that were infused with what he had learned from the modern movements in painting and sculpture. Kåge studied at Valand konstskola in Gothenburg and later in Copenhagen, where he got to know artist Gösta Adrian-Nilsson (GAN) and became familiar with modern art. He studied graphic art in Munich and began his artistic career by designing posters for theaters and exhibitions. When Gustavsberg needed new products for the home Exhibition at Liljevalch in 1917, Kåge was hired. He developed 30 different tableware, colorful faience, stoneware, and series such as Carrara, Surrea, and Våga. In 1942, Kåge developed Gustavsberg's studio together with designer Stig Lindberg. The studio became an aesthetic laboratory for objets d'art. Kåge's work was not only popular in Sweden, but also gained international recognition. His pieces were exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Today, Kåge's ceramics are highly sought after by collectors. His contributions to the field of ceramics are celebrated for their timeless beauty and innovative techniques, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of artists and designers.d.
