About the Item

This large Turkish jug was used to store water in cisterns or carry it to sempozyum tables. The cylindrical body, tapered rim, and handles for carrying are common, functional design details on Anatolian water vessels. This unique piece features a splattered slip of color at the base. Water holds deep spiritual & symbolic significance in Turkish culture. Not only is it used daily in kitchens and hamams, but the word ""Su"" (water) flows through colloquial phrases. If you're leaving on long journey, friends might say, “Su gibi git, su gibi gel (Go like water, return like water),” while tossing water behind you to wish a safe journey. If you think a person is effortlessly attractive, you might say they are “su gibi güzel” (beautiful like water). Or your compliments can be shortened to “su gibi” (like water). One of the oldest urban centers of the world, Konya was the capital city of the Anatolian Seljuk Empire from 1060 until 1307. As the Anatolian Seljuks embellished their magnificent structures with colorful ceramic tiles, Konya became an esteemed global hub of ceramics (and remains so today). Rumi, the great 13th century Sufi poet, is buried in Konya. *One-of-a-kind and marked by time, each of these pieces will show patina and natural imperfections. From oil stains to oxidation, we consider these alterations to be portals into a time long ago.
