About the Item

An octagonal green and blue earthenware vase with blue glazed squares, marked Austria and numbered 7143. These type of vases were made in the Vienna School of Applied Arts (Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule). A very decorative piece with an elegant and sophisticated design. Wiener Werkstätte objects are becoming increasingly rare. See in the last picture documentation of a very similar vase that appeared in the 1983 Wiener Werkstätte auction by Christie's has been added to the presentation for reference. The catalogue comes with the purchase of the vase. The piece is in very good condition, no chips, marked underneath. Background information: The Vienna "Supreme School for the Applied Arts" opened in 1868. From 1875 to 1877, an adjacent new building for the arts and crafts school was built at Stubenring 3. In 1897 the management employed Otto Wagner, Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann and others in the arts and crafts school.
