About the Item

Beautifully crafted and beautifully preserved, this black slate and rosewood tray -- originally made to serve as an ashtray, but now a perfect piece to position on a desk, kitchen counter or vestibule -- was crafted by the famed Harpswell House in Maine. Paul Evans and Phil Powell are rumored to have played a role in designing pieces for Harpswell, and indeed this tray seems a close cousin to Evans' metal furniture, but there is no hard evidence that they served as designers for this firm. Harpswell House, founded in 1960, still exists, and is known for crafting pieces -- many serving as commemorative objects -- from slate and hardwoods, though of course rosewood is no longer used. Both the slate and wood virtually glow; the original label survives on the bottom.
