About the Item

Piero Fornasetti (Italian, 1913-1988) Soli e Lune (Suns and Moons) Coaster Set Circa 1955-60 Transfer-printed and glazed ceramic 4 inches (diameter) x 1/4 inches (height), each Milan, Italy A quintessential expression of Piero Fornasetti's celestial fascination, this set of Soli e Lune coasters captures the artist's unique blend of surrealist wit and neoclassical elegance. Each of the ceramic discs is decorated with a distinct, anthropomorphic depiction of the sun or moon, rendered with the graphic precision that defines Fornasetti's work. Originally conceived as elegant holders for cocktail snacks, these pieces exemplify Fornasetti's philosophy of transforming everyday objects into works of functional art. Fornasetti's visual universe was populated by a recurring cast of motifs, with astronomical and classical themes holding a place of particular importance. As noted by author Patrick Mauriès, "The sun was eventually recognized as one of Fornasetti's personal devices," making this set a deeply characteristic example of his oeuvre. The playful yet mysterious expressions on each celestial face invite intrigue and showcase the artist's limitless imagination. Each coaster bears the signature Fornasetti-Milano mark of a hand holding a brush, affirming its authenticity. The set is further documented in the artist's catalogue raisonné, Fornasetti: The Complete Universe, which illustrates an identical set from the 1950s. More than mere accessories, these coasters are miniature canvases that distill the magical, dreamlike world of one of the 20th century's most singular designers. (Ref: NY10931-cmr)
