About the Item

Spode 'New Stone' Imari Punch Bowl English, Regency Period, Circa 1815-1820 This beautiful and vibrant punch bowl is a superb example of English ceramic artistry from the celebrated Spode factory during the high Regency period. Decorated in a rich and opulent "Imari" palette, it perfectly captures the era's fascination with exotic, Asian-inspired designs. The bowl's brilliant colors and dense, intricate pattern are a testament to Spode's mastery of both ceramic technology and fashionable taste. Description and Design The bowl is lavishly decorated both inside and out with Spode's intricate Pattern #2283. The interior features a magnificent central jardinière overflowing with flowers, set against a ground of fine, iron-red leaves. This is framed by a wide, complex border of fan-shaped floral cartouches and scrolling foliage. The exterior is continuously decorated with the same stunning motifs. The decoration is executed in the classic Imari colors—a palette dominated by deep underglaze cobalt blue, rich iron-red, and lustrous gilding, which would have shimmered magnificently in the candlelight of a Regency dining room. The piece is clearly marked on the base, identifying both the pattern number and the ceramic body as "SPODE'S NEW STONE." Historical Background & Context 🧐 Spode's 'New Stone China': This bowl is made from "New Stone," a durable, high-quality earthenware patented by Josiah Spode II in 1805. This dense, slightly grey-toned body was stronger than standard earthenware and was the perfect vehicle for the heavily applied enamels and gilding of the popular "Japan" patterns, as the style was then known. It was a major commercial success for the Spode factory, a leader of innovation in the Staffordshire potteries. The Regency Taste for Imari: The Regency era (1811-1820) was a period of opulent and eclectic taste, heavily influenced by the Prince Regent himself. Designs inspired by Japanese porcelain, first exported from the port of Imari, were the height of fashion. By the early 19th century, original Japanese pieces were rare and extremely expensive, and English factories like Spode, Worcester, and Derby capitalized on the demand by producing their own brilliant interpretations. Spode, in particular, excelled in creating these dense, colorful, and luxurious patterns, which became a hallmark of the fashionable English interior. This punch bowl is a perfectly preserved artifact of its time, showcasing the technical and artistic prowess of one of England's greatest potteries and the sophisticated, global tastes of the Regency era. Details, Marks, and Condition Marks: Hand-painted pattern number 2283 in red script and an impressed stamp "SPODE'S NEW STONE." Condition: Excellent.
