Birmingham Guild Handicraft Arts & Crafts patinated hand-hammered brass chalice

About the Item

Birmingham Guild of Handicraft, attributed. A rare English Arts & Crafts patinated hand-hammered brass chalice, with matching removable bowl & lid with Enamel Decoration. The stand stood on a circular base with applied hand-formed scrollwork details that rise up and open out to an upper ring at the top of the stand with three enamels, two enamels depicting Rams. The Ram represents the power to penetrate, overcome, and achieve. It reflects the assertion of strength in creative ways to achieve a breakthrough. Rams are often associated with leadership, guidance, and wisdom. The third enamel also to the top of the stand depicts The Scales of Justice which represents fairness. There are two sides to every story, and each side of a story must be heard. Each side gets the chance to present their side. Lady Justice carefully “weighs” the claims of each side, using the scales of justice. The fourth enamel is missing, they are all surrounded by leaf decoration. They are intercepted by four opposite red lozenge-shaped enamels. The ovoid-shaped bowl sits snugly into its chalice-style stand, with its original lid with four opposing colorful enameled squares to the finial, each of the four enamels is surrounded by rope twist details with heart-shaped decorative details below.
