Black Forest Compote Stand or Comport of Carved Wood
About the Item
The compote is in two sections - an oval bowl-shaped latticework top secured to a carved stand and base.
The base is of a circular shape depicting two opposing scenes of feathered fowl among clusters of leaves with acorns (a rooster with a hen and chick on one side; a game bird on the other) perched beneath an oval arbor of woven branches, leaves and acorns, the arbor possibly having supported an oval bowl.
Black Forest carvings were produced in the Black Forest region of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (especially the region surrounding the village, Brienz)
The highly skilled woodcarvers of this region excelled in capturing the form and spirit of their subjects while harnessing the natural beauty of the carving material - often linden wood, oak, and walnut.
