About the Item

Cantagalli Armorial Vase, Ulisse Cantagalli (1839-1901) During the 19th century Renaissance-Revival period the Cantagalli Maiolica and Ceramic Factory near Florence produced authentic copies of Renaissance Maiolica using traditional methods of tin glazing earthenware. This exceptional Armorial vase is painted in the front with a Coat of Arms representing a rampant lion on a Dual color (Blue and Maroon) base with the Florentine emblem of the Fleur de Lis hanging off his neck; with a stylistic representation of cobalt blue flowers scattered all around the vase with a white background. The "Anse" comprises two pairs of twisted snakes resting on a pair of gargoyle heads. Two additional lion heads sit below the vase neck. A pair of leopards facing each other are reproduced in a stylistic way at the back of the vase. A concave shape base is decorated in multi-color vertical stripes in relief. The Cantagalli trademark "Rooster" is clearly visible underneath the vase. A lesser ornate vase with a similar rampant lion and foliage is displayed at the V&A Museum Ceramic collection in London GB.
