About the Item

Covered Orb Vessel by Yumiko Kuga. Dimensions: W 5.25" x H 4.5" x D 4.5" Born in Japan, Yumiko Kuga has been a potter for almost 30 years. Her passion in creating crafts by hand sprang from childhood. With a background in fashion, she was particularly fascinated with the natural ways in which fabrics fell and took form in drapery. Her interest turned towards pottery when she came to the United States in 1983. Two years later she enrolled in a course at the Greenwich House Pottery, where her new favorite pastime grew into an occupation. Striving to create works serving both functional and aesthetics purposes, she searches for simple and beautiful forms found in nature which are transformed into objects of everyday use.

Wood-Fired Hand Built Bowl with Shino Glaze
By Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Located in New York, NY
This small hand built ceramic bowl is truly unique, from the rustic hand formed shape to the surface treatment. It was wood-fired in an "Anagama" kiln in Upstate New York, a traditional Japanese kiln. These kilns are made of special bricks built on a slowly slanting hillside with several firing chambers. Wood must be added to the fire over several days and nights. Heat and smoke from the ash swirls through the kiln, landing almost randomly on the work. Depending on its location in the kiln and any glaze that was applied, the effects can vary widely. This piece has a traditional Shino Glaze...
