Decorative Ceramic Tray by Charles René Neveux for Cerenne Workshop, c. 1950s
About the Item
Mid-century ceramic hors d'oeuvres tray by Charles René Neveux for Cerenne Workshop (circa 1950s). This rare ceramic with abstract motif is signed by Neveux himself. A tomato-red base is complemented by a yellow repeating pattern at the edges and a dash of turquoise from the abstract in the recess of the tray. An eye-catching piece from the South of France. When it was created, the 1955 film, Et Dieu Créa la Femme (And God Created Woman), starring Brigitte Bardot, forever changed the Riviera into a legendary seaside resort, sparkling amid the glitz of the South of France. This piece evokes that time period perfectly. In good overall condition. The maker's mark is stamped on the underside and it is signed by Mr. Neveux with what appears to be the name, 'Pierre', perhaps as a gift to a friend. Upon request a video will be provided.
About Atelier Cerenne: Created by Charles René Neveux, the Cerenne workshop, active from 1945 - 1958, takes its name from the contraction of its company name "Céramique René Neveux". At the height of its renown, the workshop was one of the most important in Vallauris, employing around fifty people, including 15 decorators. Its production ranged from utilitarian ceramics to unique pieces with special custom orders for French and international customers. Cerenne also created pieces of furniture with ceramic decoration. Pieces signed by René Neveux himself are relatively rare.

Atelier CERENNE RENE NEVEUX VALLAURIS 50s French Ceramic Abstract pair plate
Located in Valladolid, ES
A bold and evocative abstract design decorates this mid century sculptural pair of plates from the Atelier Cerenne founded by Charles Rene Neveux in Vallauris, France in the commune of Vence. Signed verso, this gorgeous example of ceramic artistry is a tour de force of quality, restraint and style. The strong black ground is heightened by the incised white outline and further added to by the use of red, blue, yellow and green and 2 fish . Charles Rene Neveux founded the Atelier Cerenne in 1945 and it was active up through 1958 when it was sold. The atelier was best known for the small and high end production runs that produced such beautiful objects as the one here. It has been said that the Atelier Cerenne takes its name from the contraction of the founders name, Charles Rene Neveux. For a bit of history on Vallauris, here's a tidbit from the Perfectly Provence website: "Vallauris Golfe-Juan – “city of 100 potters” – is a tourist town on the French Riviera between Antibes and Cannes. Its name (Valauria in Provencal) means “the golden valley.” Divided into two parts; the old centre of Vallauris, and the seaside section running from the port along the Côte d’Azur, towards Antibes... However, 20th-century modernization brings with it a decline in artisanal pottery activity in Vallauris. After WWII, Picasso gives a new impetus to the pottery of Vallauris when he chooses to settle in the city. Like a magnet, the presence of Picasso draws...
