Georgian Mason's Ironstone Large Bowl in Water Lily Pattern Old Stapled Repair

About the Item

This is a beautiful Mason's Ironstone pottery large bowl in the very decorative Water Lily pattern, produced by the Mason's factory at Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, circa 1813-1820. The large bowl is circular with radial ribs and a slightly lobed indented rim and sits on a low foot. The bowl is finely decorated in one of Mason's most beautiful chinoiserie patterns, called Water Lily, which is also one of their most sought after patterns. The pattern is very richly hand painted, over-glaze in brilliant enamels of cobalt blue, burnt orange, green and puce all in varying shades, possibly over an under-glaze printed outline and with additional rich gilded highlights. This pattern is illustrated on Page 136 of Mason's Pattern book published by The Mason's Collectors' Club The base has the double line impressed mark " MASONS PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA" which is recorded as being one of the earliest impressed factory marks indicating a date of circa 1813-1820 as ironstone was only produced by them from 1813, which is late George 111 period. This bowl exhibits the quality and boldness of the hand painting that is seen on the early Mason's pieces and exhibits only small signs of wear from use. Please note this fine bowl has an old repair using metal rivets or staples - please see images. Despite the old professional repair this is a very fine early bowl and displays very very well. Notes on ceramic repair using staples and rivets to Join Broken Pottery: This is the old method of using metal pegs and pins to join Broken Pottery?? Hundreds of years ago, before the availability of adhesives, pottery was repaired with metal staples or rivets on particularly valuable pieces holding together the broken ceramic segments. Small holes were drilled in to the piece and then the staples are inserted.
