About the Item

Hand carved ceramic vase by Leah Jensen, 2015. This wonderful piece combines the contemporary modern with the Italian Renaissance. Based on the 15th century painting, ‘Primavera’ by Sandro Botticelli, this black stoneware vessel has a carved, faceted exterior. A true work of art, more a piece of sculpture than pottery. Leah Jensen is a ceramicist who has pioneered a distinctive technique of carving geometric patterns into clay. Leah’s research examines European painting between the 14th-16th centuries, depicting tales of sorrow, tragedy and beauty. Images of the paintings are applied to the unfired clay surface; pins are then used to map out significant points unearthing a hidden geometric structure within the painting. The points left behind dictate where the patterns will be carved, a process devised to allow Leah to focus on the quality of the carving, creating a greater technical Challenge. This ‘Primavera’ vase took 101 hours to complete. Signed and date 2015 with a burned wood plaque on the bottom. Primavera ("Spring"), is a large panel painting in tempera by the Italian Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli made in the late 1470s or early 1480s. 16 inches high 10 inches diameter

Contemporary Porcelain 'Fragment Vase' by Vezzini and Chen
Located in London, GB
Inspired by rock formation, Fragments is a collection of porcelain vases, the largest yet produced by the duo. Each porcelain vase is made using traditional slip casting technique, where liquid clay in poured into a plaster mould and allowed to form a layer before the excess liquid is poured out. The surface is then hand carved following the faceted form of the vase making each vase completely unique. The different textured surfaces create an interplay between light and shadow typical of Vezzini & Chen’s work. The fragment vases...
