Théodore DECK, Eugène GLUCK, Ornamental Dish With A Bucolic Scene

About the Item

This large dish, fashioned by the great ceramist Théodore Deck and painted by Eugène Gluck, was created in 1866. Entirely decorative, our piece presents a scene worthy of a painting by Antoine Watteau. It is a galant feast in a bucolic setting. The costumes are reminiscent of the Renaissance. The centre of the set is occupied by a young girl on an escarpolette, a swinging seat suspended by ropes. It's a game that can turn out to be mischievous, when the long johns or petticoats are revealed by the wind. Two young women, richly adorned, are in conversation while a couple are enjoying a flirtatious moment. The ceramist Théodore Deck is renowned for his technical expertise and his collaborations with artists. Here, he has enlisted the talents of Eugène Gluck, a painter and illustrator who, like him, hails from the Haut-Rhin region. Théodore Deck and Eugène Gluck began working together in 1862. During this period, Gluck exhibited picturesque historical scenes at the Salon, in the vein of this décor. Works by Deck are held by the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, as well as the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
