Théophile SOYER, Renaissance-Style Ornamental Dish
About the Item
This enamelled ornamental dish with neo-Renaissance decoration was made by Théophile Soyer in 1880.
The son of enameller Paul Soyer, Théophile Soyer attended the École des Beaux-Arts and took over his father's workshop in 1896. His great technical mastery was rewarded at the Universal Exhibitions in 1889 and 1900.
The decoration on this dish depicts a female hunter: a falcon resting on her fist, the rider is accompanied by a page holding two hunting dogs on a leash. In the background are the towers of a medieval castle.
Renowned for his historicist work, the artist was inspired by medieval and renaissance art, and liked to depict characters from past centuries. Here, the lady and the page are dressed in 15th-century fashion.
The work is signed and dated.
