Upsala Ekeby Porcelain Art Deco Vase by Mari Simmulson with Foil Label

About the Item

Mari Simmulson designed Swedish mid-century ceramic vase. Decorated in a geometric figural pattern. Maker: Upsala-Ekeby. Height:10 3/8 in., Diameter: 7 1/4 in. Very good vintage condition with no damage. Marked on the base: MS (Mari Simmulson), Sweden and 4346. A foil label reading “Upsala Ekeby” is still attached to the upper vase. Mari Simmulson (1911-2000) was born to Estonian parents in St Petersburg, Russia. At the start of the Russian revolution in 1917, the family moved back to Estonia. During the 1930s, Mari studied at the State Art School in Tallinn. After her formal education, Mari further developed her skills at the nearby Arabia porcelain factory in Helsinki. Mari Simmulson is a well-known representative of the illustrious Swedish ceramic design of the 20th century. She was one of the leading designers for Gustavsberg and Upsala-Ekeby in the 1940s-1960s. Simmulson is represented at the Swedish National Museum of Art and Design.
