William IVth PAIR-(A) of C J Masons Cups & Saucers Porcelain Ptn 223, Ca 1830

About the Item

This is an early English, PAIR of porcelain Tea Cups and Saucers, made by C. J. Mason (The same factory who produced Mason's Ironstone) during the period of William IVth, circa 1830-1835. This listing is for the two pairs, two cups & two saucers, making four pieces in total. The pieces are well potted. The cups are slightly vertically fluted with a ring handle having a thumb spur, on a low foot with a wavy rim. The saucers also have a slight vertical flute with a wavy rim. All pieces are decorated with detailed hand enamelling in many different colours all over a printed outline. The pattern is a listed Mason's pattern called Vase and Box pattern, having a central octagonal panel surrounded by a floral vine with additional floral sprigs and scrolls in typical bright enamels. This pattern is illustrated on page 114 of a guide to Mason's patent ironstone patterns, published by The Mason's collectors club. This pattern was also used on ironstone and earthenware wares. The cups are marked with the pattern number 223 in iron red and the saucers are marked to the base: English porcelain within a circular garter. Overall a very pretty PAIR of English Cups and saucers nearly 200 years old.
