Blue and White Delft Dish Hand-Painted 18th Century, England, Circa 1760
Located in Katonah, NY
This Delft blue and white dish was hand-painted in England in the 18th century circa 1760. The painting is quite naive but eye-catching. In the center, we see a large blue ground before three homes, each with a chimney. To the left, we see a large peony, and to the right, a pine tree. The wide border shows six flower buds on the vine, and along the edge are scrolling vines. Dimensions: 9.25" diameter Condition: Excellent Price: $560 Background of English Delft: The art of making Delft began in England in the Mid-1500s. An English delftware jug has been found in East Malling, Kent, with a silver mount hallmarked 1550, which is presumed to be the earliest date of English delftware manufacture. John Stow's Survey of London (1598) records the arrival in 1567 of two Antwerp potters, Jasper Andries and Jacob Jansen...

Polychrome Chinoiserie Lobed Dish Delft, 1680-1690
Located in ROSSUM, GE
Polychrome chinoiserie lobed dish. Delft, 1680-1690 The lobed dish is composed of nine wide lobes around a nine-fold centre and is painted with a chinoiserie decor in purple, yellow and green. Two Chinese figures in an eastern landscape are depicted in the centre, one of them carries a banner. The landscape is framed within lines and a white band. The border is decorated with a continuous landscape with two reclining and two standing Chinese figures. A lobed dish of the same shape and design in purple, blue and green is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts holds a variant in blue and yellow. In the same museum are three lobed dishes, each with twenty-seven double lobes with chinoiserie landscapes in the same colour scheme of purple, yellow and green. In the second half of the seventeenth century many lobed dishes were painted with Chinese motifs, mostly landscapes with Chinese figures. The vast majority are in blue. Two- or multi-coloured chinoiserie decorations were very fashionable during a short period of time, predominantly in the 1680s. In addition to lobed dishes, they also appear on wine jugs, beer mugs, butter pots, covered spiced-wine bowls and dishes. Some of this Delftware is still wrongly attributed to a factory in the German town of Frankfurt, and sometimes it is even considered to be English. An excavated chinoiserie butter pot in purple, green and yellow, found in a cesspit in the grounds of the Porcelain Bottle factory, proves otherwise. A beer mug with the portrait of the Dutch prince Willem III...

Large Antique Italian Blue and White Lidded Urn, 19th Century
Located in Dallas, TX
This stunning lidded urn might have once been found in a 19th century Italian apothecary. The front of the shaped urn body has the hand-painted phrase “C. Violaru”, which is the heavily abbreviated form of the Latin word for violet (violaceum). Up until the mid-1700’s, apothecaries would make syrups from violets and use it to treat kidney ailments. Above the Latin wording is a whimsical musical scene with a man blowing a horn leading a couple who is holding hands over rocky terrain lined with shrubbery. A large house and trees can be seen behind the trio with a pair of mountains in the distance. On the opposite side of the urn is a floral display with a bird perched on a rock. Beneath the bird is a geometric design, possibly a stylized sun with radiating beams of light. Both scenes are segmented by a pair of thin quarter round moldings that encircle the entire vase. Other hand-painted motifs include floral and foliate margents, geometric patterns, and Vitruvian waves that are infilled with horizontal fluting. The sides of the urn have a fish-scale background beneath two mustachioed mascarons. Both men have been styled in grotesque fashion, with a pair of spiraled horns emanating from their heads. In between the horns is a looping handle that is affixed to the body in similar tight spirals. The domed lid has three scrolled arms that merge in a geometric finial. The base color of the urn is white, with illustrations in a monochromatic cobalt oxide blue, reminiscent of Delft blue pottery...
