About the Item

This fine pair of faience chargers were crafted by the pottery manufactory in Montereau, France. The manufactory was established in the 18th century and flourished in the 19th century with the creation of Creil-Montereau faience, a kind of lead-based earthenware set on a white body which originated in the area which these chargers are crafted from. The pair of chargers are each of circular shape and feature a simple gilt rim. Each of the chargers depicts a bust-length portrait of a noblewoman in the Renaissance style. Each of the sitters wear sumptuous clothing, jewels and plumed hats. One of the chargers is signed 'Poitevin', which likely refers to Eugene Poitevin, a porcelain painter who worked for the Sevres manufactory in the late 19th century. The reverse of each of the chargers bear marks of 'Montereau & Cie' and the number '30'. The chargers are set within square, ebonized wooden frames with stepped interior rims and scrolling foliage decorations at each of the corners.
